Woodlands Wines are Carbon NeutralWoodlands Margaret River Winery is a ten hectare vineyard located on the Wilyabrup region of the Margaret River. The winery has built its reputation on fine wines and the array of awards that it has received is testament to this.Established in 1973 by David and Heather Watson, Woodlands remains family owned and operated. Wines produced at Woodlands include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Merlot, Malbec, Merlot, Cab Franc, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Woodlands now has an annual production of 8000 cases, specializing in red wine, and is family operated. David’s son Stuart has been the winemaker at Woodlands since 2002. In 2005 and 2006 Woodlands won Trophies at the Margaret River Wine Show, the Winewise Small Vignerons Awards, and the Boutique Wine Awards. Woodlands also won gold medals at the National Wine Show, the Margaret River Wine Show, the Perth Royal Wine Show, the Rutherglen Wine Show, the Winewise Small Vignerons Awards, and the Boutique Winemaker’s Awards. Winemaking is minimalist at Woodlands, the emphasis being on small open ferments and excellent barrel selection. Climate Change StrategyWorried about the impacts of climate change to the wine making industry, Woodlands manager Stuart Watson contacted the Carbon Reduction Institute about attaining NoCO2 certification to reduce and negate the impacts of running his winery.Woodlands had already changed its electricity supply to 100% accredited Green Power prior to consultation. The Carbon Reduction Institute calculated the greenhouse emissions from Woodlands' fuel usage onsite, employee travel, air travel, waste, nitrous oxide emissions from fertilizer as well as the embodied emissions in the glass bottles, corks and Stelvin caps. CRI also calculated the embodied emissions in producing fertilizer, as well as the emissions produced in freighting Woodlands Wines across the world. Stuart and the Carbon Reduction Institute are proud to say that every bottle of wine sold at the Woodlands Margaret River Winery is now truly carbon neutral.
